Salary trends for engineering graduates
IPENZ’s annual remuneration survey, conducted in association with RobLawMax Recruitment, provides accurate and current trends for IPENZ Members. This includes recent engineering graduate members with up to five years’ experience.
Almost 1,000 recent graduates participated in the survey. Of these, 36 per cent were from Auckland, 23 per cent from Christchurch, 20 per cent from the rest of the North Island, 14 per cent from Wellington and seven per cent from the rest of the South Island.
The median starting base salary for an engineering graduate (across all qualifications) with experience of up to one year is $52,000. This was a $1,000 increase from last year and an increase of $2,880 (5.5 per cent) since 2009.
When analysed by engineering qualification, Graduates with experience of up to one year holding a Diploma of Engineering have a median base salary of $45,000; those with a Bachelor of Engineering Technology sit at $58,000 and Bachelor of Engineering graduates at $52,000. The higher entry salary for Bachelor of Engineering Technology graduates may reflect industry competing for fewer graduates.
Data show that female Members across all career stages are still earning less than their male counterparts, earning 95 per cent of a male’s salary. Female engineers with experience of up to one year earn $52,000 compared to their male colleagues’ $53,000 base salary.
Positively, the percentage of female engineers who responded to the survey is the highest for recent graduates at 20 per cent of respondents; however, only nine per cent of respondents were female for those with six or more years' experience. This reflects the higher numbers of female engineers graduating from tertiary institutions.
